Romanticism in Herland

In Herland, Romanticism highly influences the character Ellador. Ellador has a desire to gain understanding of nature and understand the idea of human nature and it’s purity. She believes that Herland, as a society, is getting better. However, Ellador feels that if the men of Herland do not step up, then Herland will forever be mediocre.
Ellador is also in a relationship with Van. She believes in an equal relationship among man and women. With that being said, the love between Ellador and Van represents Romanticism. Lastly, Jeff and Terry both have a different approach toward woman. Jeff believes in a “Southern Gentleman” approach toward women. He believes that they should be adored and put on a pedestal. However, Terry believes in a foolish approach toward women. He is brutal and has a demeaning approach to women. With that being said, Romanticism is also shown from the two men sharing their ideas about love.

Herland: Rationlism and quotes

In Herland, the idea of a woman being completely controlled by a man is evident through many excerpts  such as this one… “We do not allow our women to work. Women are loved—idolized—honored—kept in the home to care for the children.” “What is ‘the home’?” asked Somel a little wistfully. Zava begged: “Tell me first, do no women work, really?” “Why, yes,” Terry admitted. “Some have to, of the poorer sort.  The word choice such as “allowed” and “kept” are controlling words that shows the mans power over the woman. These words go against the domestic way of thinking which the Herlandians believe in. Next, rationalism is shown were because each man is telling one another ones reason for what he believes in.
This passage from chapter five shows the uncertainty among the men on what it means for a woman to be “normal” Each man rationalizes their point of view which makes the relationship between men and woman seem normal to the others views. Lastly, this idea of explaining logic is a form of rationalism which we studied in American Literature and played a big role in developing the story of Herland.

romanticism and predictions in Herland

Celis is one of the three young women that van, Jeff, and Terry met when they first arrived in Herland. Celis and Jeff  expirienced love at first sight and later, got married. The instant and spontaneous love represents romanticism in Herland.
Celis is a respectable and innocent woman, thus making her confused my Jeff's doubt in her capabilities. She feels as if he thinks she is weaker than she really is. With that, I predicted that this relationship would end brutaly by abuse. However, Jeff and Celis continued to remain a happy couple (Thus keeping an underlying theme of romanticism). Lastly, in the end, Jeff becomes the first father to have a father in Herland history. Not only does this relate to Romanticism, but this also shows how pure Herland was without the damaging influence of the twenty-first century.

realization of the corrupt 21 century

When the men of the modern world discover Herland, they discover the women spying on them from the trees. Once the group of men (Va, Terry, and Jeff) warm up to Herland and its inhabitants, they begin to talk with the women. The men explain the problems of modern society. The women  are baffled that poverty, disease, exploitation, and violence exist in the modern world. With that being said, the men became embarrassed and started to embellish the truth. However, the woman see past the lies and get a good idea of what the modern world is like.      The women are horrified to of the execution of abortion. They believe it as harm to motherhood and life.  By talking to these women, the men realize what purity and perfection is. The men realize what "normal" should be.  The more Van and Jeff know about Herland the more they are convinced of its goodness and realize the cruelty of their own society.

What I want most is what I already have

"Education"

An Opportunity scarce in her situation
